Historical Background of the Establishment of the Department of Horting and Rehabilitation

An important milestone in the institutional development of Horting within the system of higher education in Ukraine occurred on June 1, 2018, when the President of the Ukrainian Horting Federation, Eduard Yeromenko, submitted Letter No. 12 to the Rector of the University of the State Fiscal Service of Ukraine, Professor Pavlo V. Pashko.

In his official letter, the President of the Federation expressed sincere gratitude to the University for its comprehensive support of Horting and emphasized the successful implementation of the Cooperation Agreement signed on November 1, 2017, between the University and the Ukrainian Horting Federation.

The letter highlighted that throughout the 2017–2018 academic year, the Federation had actively conducted educational, career-guidance, and sports training activities in cooperation with the Educational and Scientific Institute of Special Physical and Combat Training and Rehabilitation. This partnership significantly contributed to the preparation of qualified athletes and instructors, while many university students achieved official state sports titles, including Candidate for Master of Sports of Ukraine, Master of Sports of Ukraine, and Master of Sports of Ukraine of International Class in Horting.

The Federation also reported substantial progress in developing educational and methodological resources for Horting, promoting training programs for cadets and juniors, and integrating the sport into the educational process of higher education institutions.

Recognizing these achievements and the growing demand for professional education in Horting, Eduard Yeromenko formally proposed the establishment of a Department of Horting within the University, based at the Educational and Scientific Institute of Special Physical and Combat Training and Rehabilitation. The proposal emphasized that the new department would become a national academic center for the preparation of Horting coaches, teachers, and specialists, providing higher education opportunities for professionals working in general secondary schools, extracurricular educational institutions, vocational schools, and youth sports organizations throughout Ukraine.

The initiative also envisioned strengthening the scientific, educational, and methodological foundations of Horting while promoting the further development of Ukraine's national sport both nationally and internationally.

The proposal received the support of the University leadership. As a result, on June 27, 2018, pursuant to Protocol No. 7 of the meeting of the University's Academic Council, the Department of Horting and Rehabilitation was officially established. This decision marked a historic achievement in the academic recognition of Horting and became one of the most significant milestones in the development of Horting as an educational, scientific, and professional discipline in Ukraine.

Activities of the Department of Horting and Rehabilitation

The Department of Horting and Rehabilitation, established at the University of the State Fiscal Service of Ukraine, became the world's first university department dedicated to Horting as an academic discipline and a field of professional education. The Department integrated educational, scientific, methodological, and sports activities aimed at training highly qualified specialists in physical education, coaching, rehabilitation, and Horting.

The Department developed and implemented specialized educational programs in Horting, Sports and Mass Physical Activity, and Sports and Health Tourism within the specialty 017 – Physical Culture and Sports. Students received comprehensive theoretical knowledge and practical training in coaching methodology, sports pedagogy, physical education, sports psychology, rehabilitation, and athlete development.

A major focus of the Department was the professional preparation of Horting coaches, instructors, teachers, and sports managers. Graduates acquired the qualifications necessary to work in sports federations, educational institutions, youth sports schools, fitness and rehabilitation centers, extracurricular education organizations, and recreational sports programs.

The Department actively combined academic education with practical sports training. Students participated in Horting competitions, coaching practice, instructor certification, and scientific research devoted to martial arts, physical education, sports medicine, and rehabilitation. Educational and methodological materials, training programs, and scientific publications on Horting were systematically developed and introduced into the educational process.

The Department also served as a national center for promoting Horting among young people. It organized career guidance activities, educational seminars, coaching workshops, and sports events while supporting the development of Horting programs for cadets, juniors, university students, and physical education professionals throughout Ukraine.

Through cooperation with the Ukrainian Horting Federation, the Department contributed to the preparation of athletes who earned official Ukrainian sports titles, including Candidate for Master of Sports of Ukraine, Master of Sports of Ukraine, and Master of Sports of Ukraine of International Class in Horting. Its activities significantly strengthened the scientific foundation of Horting and promoted its recognition as a modern Ukrainian martial art and an academic discipline within higher education.

The establishment and operation of the Department represented an important milestone in the institutional development of Horting, creating a unique model that combined higher education, scientific research, coach education, athlete preparation, and international promotion of the sport.

Educational Activities of the Department of Horting

The Department of Horting operated within the Educational and Scientific Institute of Special Physical and Combat Training and Rehabilitation at the University of the State Fiscal Service of Ukraine, offering higher education under the specialty 017 – Physical Culture and Sports.

The Department introduced one of Ukraine's first university specializations in Horting, alongside Sports and Mass Physical Activity and Sports and Health Tourism. These educational programs combined academic instruction with practical sports training, preparing specialists for professional careers in physical education, coaching, rehabilitation, and sports management.

The Horting specialization provided students with comprehensive knowledge of the history and philosophy of Horting, coaching methodology, technical and tactical preparation, refereeing, sports medicine, rehabilitation, psychology, pedagogy, physical conditioning, and organization of competitions. Students also completed practical coaching internships and instructor training while participating in national Horting championships and educational seminars.

The Department welcomed applicants to both full-time and part-time Bachelor's degree programs, with opportunities for graduates to continue their education at the Master's level in Physical Culture and Sports. Admission included academic requirements together with a practical physical fitness examination.

A distinctive feature of the Department was its close cooperation with the Ukrainian Horting Federation, enabling students to combine university education with sports careers, coaching certification, referee training, and participation in national and international Horting events.

Graduates of the Department were prepared for professional careers as Horting coaches, physical education teachers, instructors, fitness trainers, rehabilitation specialists, sports club managers, youth sports school coaches, and specialists in recreational and health-oriented physical activity. Many graduates subsequently became coaches, referees, sports administrators, and leaders of Horting organizations throughout Ukraine.

By integrating higher education, scientific research, coach education, and athlete development, the Department of Horting became a pioneering academic center that established Horting as both a university discipline and a recognized field of professional training in Ukraine.

Department of Horting and Rehabilitation

The Department of Horting and Rehabilitation is a specialized academic and sports department dedicated to the education and professional training of specialists in Physical Culture, Sports, Horting, and Physical Rehabilitation. It operates at the State Tax University (formerly the University of the State Fiscal Service of Ukraine) in Irpin, as well as at the Ukrainian Humanitarian Institute in Bucha, Ukraine.

The Department was established to combine higher education, scientific research, athletic excellence, and practical coach education while promoting Horting, the national martial art and sport of Ukraine. Since its foundation, it has become one of the country's leading educational centers for preparing highly qualified coaches, teachers, rehabilitation specialists, and sports professionals.

Professional Education

The Department offers university programs in the specialty 017 – Physical Culture and Sports, with a unique specialization in Horting, alongside Sports and Mass Physical Activity and Sports and Health Tourism. The curriculum integrates theoretical education with extensive practical training, preparing students for careers in sports coaching, physical education, athletic training, rehabilitation, and sports management.

Students study a broad range of disciplines, including Horting theory and methodology, coaching techniques, sports pedagogy, sports psychology, anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, sports medicine, physical rehabilitation, sports management, competition organization, and referee training. Practical classes are complemented by coaching internships, participation in national and international competitions, and instructor certification programs.

Coach Education

One of the Department's principal missions is the preparation of highly qualified Horting coaches and instructors. Students acquire comprehensive knowledge of modern coaching methodologies, long-term athlete development, physical conditioning, technical and tactical training, competition planning, and sports ethics. Graduates are qualified to work as coaches, teachers, instructors, referees, and sports administrators in schools, universities, youth sports academies, rehabilitation centers, and national sports organizations.

Physical Rehabilitation

The Department places particular emphasis on sports rehabilitation by integrating the principles of Horting with modern rehabilitation science. Educational and research activities combine martial arts training, therapeutic exercise, health-oriented gymnastics, corrective physical education, physiotherapy, and recovery methods designed to improve physical performance, prevent injuries, and restore health after illness or sports-related trauma. This interdisciplinary approach contributes to the development of innovative rehabilitation programs for athletes and the general population.

Scientific Research

Scientific research is a fundamental component of the Department's activities. Faculty members, postgraduate researchers, and students conduct studies in sports science, pedagogy, psychology, physiology, biomechanics, rehabilitation, and martial arts methodology. Particular attention is devoted to investigating the effects of Horting training on physical fitness, functional preparedness, psychological resilience, emotional well-being, stress resistance, moral education, and the comprehensive development of children, adolescents, university students, military personnel, and adults.

The Department has produced numerous scientific publications, educational manuals, methodological recommendations, university textbooks, and research projects that contribute to the academic development of Horting as a recognized scientific discipline.

Cooperation and International Activities

The Department maintains close cooperation with the National Combat Horting Federation of Ukraine, as well as educational institutions, research organizations, rehabilitation centers, and sports federations in Ukraine and abroad. This collaboration enables students to participate in coaching practice, referee education, scientific conferences, international seminars, exchange programs, and large-scale sporting events.

The Department also actively supports the international promotion of Horting by participating in educational projects, developing coaching standards, and contributing to the preparation of specialists who represent Horting at the global level.

Student Achievements

Students of the Department consistently achieve outstanding results in national and international competitions. Many have become champions and medalists at World Horting Championships, European Championships, and national championships, earning prestigious Ukrainian sports titles, including Candidate for Master of Sports of Ukraine, Master of Sports of Ukraine, and Master of Sports of Ukraine of International Class.

These achievements reflect the Department's successful integration of academic education, scientific research, practical coaching, and elite athletic training. Through its educational, scientific, and international activities, the Department of Horting and Rehabilitation has played a significant role in establishing Horting as both an academic discipline and a modern Ukrainian martial art recognized nationally and internationally.
